Method
Make the cream cheese base
- In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla with a hand mixer until smooth.
- Spread the cream cheese mixture in an 8-inch shallow serving dish.
Cook the apple topping
- Melt the butter in a 10-inch skillet over medium heat.
- Add the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice; cook, stirring occasionally, for 8–12 minutes, until the apples are tender but still hold their shape.
- In a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch with the water until smooth.
- Stir the cornstarch mixture into the skillet and cook for 1–2 minutes, until the juices bubble and thicken.
Assemble and serve
- Remove the skillet from the heat.
- Let the apple mixture stand for 5 minutes.
- Spoon the apple mixture over the cream cheese base.
- Serve with the graham crackers for dipping.
Notes
For the best texture, let the apple mixture stand for the full 5 minutes before spooning it over the cream cheese base. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; freezing is not recommended. For a gluten-free option, serve with gluten-free graham crackers.
