Ingredients

For the rolls
  • 1 package (12 oz) King's Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sweet Rolls 12 rolls
  • 1 tsp nonstick cooking spray
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened and divided
  • 0.5 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.125 tsp kosher salt
For the icing
  • 4 oz cream cheese softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • 0.5 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

  • 1 9x13-inch baking dish

Method

Prepare and bake the rolls
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Lightly coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with the nonstick cooking spray.
  3. Keeping the rolls connected, use a serrated knife to slice the slab horizontally into a top half and a bottom half.
  4. Place the bottom half cut-side up in the baking dish.
  5. Stir 6 tablespoons of the softened butter with the brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt until evenly combined, then spread over the cut surface.
  6. Set the top half in place, cover loosely with foil, and bake for 10 minutes; uncover and bake for 2 to 4 minutes more, until the rolls are warm through and the filling is melted.
  7. Let the rolls rest for 5 minutes.
Make the icing
  1. Beat the cream cheese with the remaining 2 tablespoons butter until smooth.
  2. Beat in the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth, then spread the icing over the warm rolls.

Notes

For the best texture, spread the filling evenly over the cut surface and keep the rolls connected while slicing. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days; freezing is fine for up to 2 months, preferably without icing. For a dairy-free variation, use plant-based butter, cream cheese, and milk; check the rolls for dairy as well.
