Make the dough
- Stir the milk warmed to 105–110°F, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of the sugar together in a large bowl.
- Let the mixture stand for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.
- Whisk in the egg, melted butter, salt, and remaining 3 tablespoons sugar.
- Stir in the flour until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead with a dough hook on medium-low for 6–8 minutes, or by hand on a clean work surface for 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough and let rise at room temperature for 1–1 1/2 hours, until doubled in size.
Fill and bake
- Roll the dough into a 12x16-inch rectangle on parchment paper, with a 16-inch side facing you.
- Spread the room-temperature Nutella evenly over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border along the far long edge.
- Roll the dough up tightly toward that edge.
- Cut the log into 12 equal rolls.
- Arrange the rolls cut-side up in a parchment-lined 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Cover the rolls and let rise for 30–45 minutes, until puffy.
- Heat the oven to 350°F while the rolls rise.
- Bake for 22–27 minutes, until golden brown and the center rolls reach about 190°F.
- Let the rolls rest in the pan for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For soft, even swirls, spread the Nutella at room temperature and leave the stated border along the far edge. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days; these rolls freeze well. For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free milk and butter and a dairy-free chocolate-hazelnut spread.
