Ingredients

  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.125 tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 cup whole milk
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream
  • 0.5 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, cinnamon, salt, and 1 cup of the milk until smooth.
  2. Whisk in the remaining 3 cups milk and the heavy cream.
  3. Warm over medium heat, stirring often, until steaming but not boiling, about 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  5. Add the chocolate chips and stir until completely melted and smooth.
  6. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Divide among four mugs and serve hot.

Notes

For the smoothest drink, whisk the cocoa mixture until completely smooth before adding the remaining milk. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days; freezing is not recommended because the dairy may separate. For a dairy-free option, use unsweetened oat milk, plant-based cream, and dairy-free chocolate chips.
