Turtle Caramel Cake is a sweet treat combining moist chocolate cake, gooey caramel, and crunchy pecans. This easy recipe creates a dessert masterpiece in just a few steps.

Ingredients List:

Cake Base:

  • 1 (18 ounce) box of German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 1/3 cups water (or as specified on the cake mix package)
  • 1/3 cup oil (or as specified on the cake mix package)
  • 3 eggs (or as specified on the cake mix package)

Caramel Layer:

  • 1 (14 ounce) bag of caramels
  • 1/2 cup of evaporated milk
  • 3/4 cup of melted butter

Toppings:

  • 1 cup of chocolate chips
  • 2 cups of pecans

How to Make Turtle Caramel Cake:

Step 1: Preparing the Cake Base

  • Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Prepare the Pan: Grease a 13×9 inch baking pan to ensure easy removal of the cake.
  • Mix the Batter: In a large mixing bowl, prepare the German chocolate cake mix as per the instructions on the package, using the specified amounts of water, oil, and eggs. Ensure a smooth and lump-free batter.
  • First Bake: Pour half of the batter into the greased pan and spread it evenly. Place it in the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes. Once done, remove it from the oven and let it cool slightly.

Step 2: Crafting the Caramel Layer

  • Melt the Caramels: In a double boiler, combine the caramels, evaporated milk, and melted butter. Stir continuously until the mixture is smooth and well-blended.
  • Layering: Pour the melted caramel mixture evenly over the partially baked cake base.
  • Add Toppings: Sprinkle 1 cup of pecans and chocolate chips uniformly over the caramel layer.

Last Step: Finalizing the Cake

  • Second Bake: Pour the remaining cake batter over the caramel and pecan layer, ensuring an even spread. Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until the cake is fully cooked and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool before slicing. For an extra touch of indulgence, you can drizzle additional caramel sauce and sprinkle some pecans on top before serving.
